so my laptop after almost a year of functioning on the default xp pro install it came with started flacking out really bad.
so i back up my data to my main comp. then i pop in my xp pro sp1 slipstreamed cd i made (my laptop didnt come with an xp pro cd grrr). i get to the cd key part. i punch in the cd key that legitimately comes with the laptop, and it will not work. so i pop in the other key i have and get into windows. i look up how to change the cd key from within windows. i get this link off the web. i do exactly as it says and still it will not work.
so my conclusion is that my laptop didn’t come with sp1. i do not remember if it did or not. the cd key label should say if it was windows xp pro sp1 and it doesnt.
so now i have to make a plain windows xp cd key, then upgrade to sp1. how retarded. all this crap that only hurts a legitimate user. way to go ms.
on a lighter note, i am working on a public library’s computers and network. they had a cisco 1721 router set up as a bridge from msln that gives them a free 56k frame relay internet connection. this means that all the computers (including the printer) had publicly-routable ip addresses. two of the computers got the welchia virus due to this fact.
anyway, i have now put in a clarkconnect 2.0 linux router to segment the library’s network from that of the msln network. it acts as firewall, dhcp, web-caching, wins, and limited file serving. i also moved the webserver/fileserver (windows nt 4.0 server) into the mechanical room. i hooked up the apc smartups 700va ups to the router, switch, and file server. i don’t think it can handle the clarkconnect computer too. i need a management cable for it also.
i built the head librarian a new computer out of the donated computers they got.
so i’m donating my time for the library. i see it as experience and it is rather fun.

So this comp upgrade is pretty sweet. Got everything installed. Only 2 complaints with the mobo: needs more fan headers and a 2nd rounded ide cable would have been nice. Would also be nice to disable blinky lights on the NB fan. But I guess I would need to replace it. I’ll prolly eventually get a better hsf for my P4 chip. Maybe a newer video card. All in all sweet setup.
Install of the board went good. I tried to boot into my existing Windows 2000 Pro SP4 os, but I kept getting stop errors. No matter. I needed to reformat; only have to reformat the os partition so its easy. Put my SP4 cd in and ran it. Got like halfway through install and it barfed. No video. So I tried it again. Did the same. So I threw in my SP3 cd and it went fine. Got into windows, loaded all the drivers, SP4, windowsupdate, some core programs (aim, msi utils, ghost) then ghosted the os partition for later reinstall.
Playing around with overclocking is easy. The msi util allows for dynamic (and automatic) overclocking within windows. Wow. Will get into that stuff later.
Seti@home does a wu in about 3.5hrs. Uses 50% of the cpu due to hyperthreading. The os for all intensive purposes sees my cpu as two of them. So I tried running one seti@home process on one cpu. Then tried loading another, but I gotta make another seti@home folder. Oh well.
Woke up this morning with a sore throat and nasal congestion. Now feel like I’m prolly getting a cold. Yay, not even the cold/flu season. Well, at least my body will be prepared. I’m drinken my OJ and eating fruity snacks all filled with my vitamin c. I’m a strong believer in vitamin c keeping colds and flus away. I only manage like one cold (usually a bad one) per cold/flu season. I got some strong-ass immune system that beats all that other crap off. Last year I got some stomach virus. Wow that sucked. Puked my brains out for like 24hrs. Then it was done. Never puked soooooo much in my entire life.
Fucking rant time: Power. I’m used to the power going out up here. It happens at least once a month, and usually for a few hours in duration. Yesterday into the night we had a rain storm. Nothing too bad. Hell it’s been so fucking rainy here in Maine you wouldn’t believe we were still in a drought. Fucking power goes out around 6:30pm and doesn’t come back on till round 11pm. My power company, CMP, when I called their number to report the outage, the prerecorded message was “due to the inclement weather, we have several outages in our service area. Crews have been dispatched. No ETA on power restoration.” What a load a crap. Since when is a fucking rain storm inclement weather. No wind, no lightning, no hail, no ice, no snow…….. Prolly some fuck doing 80mph on some back road took a pole out. Fucking 500ft from the beginning of my road there is power. God, that pissed me off. Such fucking stupid shit.
Oh fucken well. I took my laptop over to my friends house five miles away where he had power, and played gta vice city, multitheftauto mod. Soooo much fun. Anyways, gotta get to sleep and fight this cold.
