Back from the dead.

Nailbat.org is once again operational. What happened was that I had one harddrive completely fail in my web server. I thus lost all my web sites, my friends web sites, email and other files. The harddrive that was in the web server was a 4yr old Maxtor 10gb ide, out of warranty. No signs of dying. It just dropped dead. I went to Staples and bought two new Maxtor 30gb harddrives. I took the server home to reinstall the os (installing redhat 8.0 since I didn’t have my 7.3 cds burned or could find the isos). I installed redhat 8.0, spending an hour figuring out how to do software raid. Both harddrives will now have exact copies of each other (aka RAID 1 or mirroring). I managed to salvage some data off the last remaining harddrive, but also found out this harddrive was dying. The data I got were the mysql databases (this blog amongst other things), and some config files.
So I didn’t lose the blog thank god. So in short, the server is now better than before. I plan on buying a cdrw drive at some point and put that in. Then leave a cdrw disc in the drive. Use amanda to backup critical files (aka web sites, configs, databases, etc) and then dump it onto the cdrw like 3x a week.
So now comes the process of rebuilding my other sites and reinstalling apps, tweaking the system, etc.
